Abstract
The fundamental results of the space crystallization experiment with model eutectic Ag-Ge system are presented in this paper. Microgravity provides conditions of a suppressed transport of components in melts that are useful for the study of crystallization. The results showed an enhanced stability of undercooled melts under limited transport of components. Unusual growth morphology of primary Ge in hypereutectic alloy arises from this phenomenon. Large nucleation undercooling of primary α crystals (hypoeutectic alloy) leads to the inverse microsegregation pattern. Non-uniform distribution of both components in eutectic due to the growth undercooling was observed in hypoeutectic alloy. Quantitative estimation of maximum undercooling of eutectic was performed using the growth model.
