Abstract The stress relaxation tests are used in order to investigate deformation of alpha zirconium and zirconium tin alloys. It is found that the temperature dependence of the activation volume is non-monotonic; a local maximum is observed. The maximum value of the activation volume is depressed by the presence of tin atoms. The overcoming of the Peierls stress, modified by the presence of oxygen atoms is considered to be the thermally activated glide at low temperatures. At intermediate temperatures the movement of dislocations is influenced by oxygen atoms. A non-conservative jog motion with screw dislocation is probably the rate controlling mechanism at higher temperatures.
