Abstract Magnesium alloy Mg-1.3%Nd reinforced with short Saffil fibres was thermally cycled between room temperature and increasing upper temperature of the thermal cycle. The amplitude dependence of the logarithmic decrement was measured at room temperature after thermal treatment. An increase of the decrement was observed in both amplitude independent and amplitude dependent component of the decrement after thermal treatment. Changes in the microstructure are reason for such behaviour. The newly created dislocations at the interfaces between metallic matrix and ceramic fibres contribute to internal friction. The interaction between the movable solute atoms and dislocation segments influences the damping.
