Abstract The paper presents a new model of carbon redistribution in ferritic steel weldments. The model respects the diffusion characteristics of carbon and substitutional elements, interaction of carbon with substitutional elements, and the rate of cementite formation and dissolution. By means of this model it is possible either to predict the carbon redistribution in steel weldments by using the known thermodynamic, kinetic, diffusion, and phase data, or to estimate the mentioned data from measured carbon redistribution. We have applied the quoted model in prediction of carbon redistribution in chosen steel weldments and in estimation of chromium-carbon interaction coefficients, carbon diffusion coefficients, and cementite formation rate. The results of theoretical calculations are compared with the results of measured carbon redistribution in the ferritic steel weldments Fe-0.7C/Fe-0.4C-mCr (where m =0-0.10-0.39-1.71 wt.% Cr) at the temperature 700 °C.
